Understanding the Website Traffic Report

Contents

The Website Traffic report is one of the most important reports within Insight Owl.

It provides a clear view of how many people are visiting your website, how often they return and how they interact with your content. Rather than presenting complicated analytics dashboards, Insight Owl translates the data into simple, easy-to-understand insights.

Whether you’re a business owner, marketing manager or agency user, this report helps you understand how your website is performing over time.

What does the Website Traffic report show?

The Website Traffic report shows how visitors have interacted with your website over a selected date range.

By default, Insight Owl analyses the previous 12 months of data. However, you can easily change the reporting period to:

    • This week
    • Last week
    • Last month
    • A custom date range

Once the report is generated, Insight Owl gathers data from Google Analytics and presents the information in a visual dashboard alongside a plain English summary.

The report focuses on four core metrics:

    • Users
    • Sessions
    • Page Views
    • Bounce Rate

Together, these metrics provide a strong indication of overall website performance.

    What are users?

Users represent the number of individual people who have visited your website during the selected reporting period.

If one person visits your website several times, they are generally counted as a single user.

This metric helps answer a simple question.

How many people are reaching your website?

Insight Owl also compares this figure against the previous reporting period and shows the percentage increase or decrease.

This makes it easy to see whether your audience is growing or shrinking over time.

    What are sessions?

Sessions measure the number of visits made to your website.

Because one person may visit your website multiple times, session numbers are usually higher than user numbers.

    For example:

    • 100 users may generate 150 sessions.
    • This means some visitors returned more than once.

Session data helps you understand how frequently people engage with your website and whether visitors are coming back.

As with users, Insight Owl compares sessions against the previous reporting period and highlights any significant changes.

    What are page views?

Page views represent the number of pages viewed across your website.

Every time a visitor loads a page, it contributes towards your page view count.

This metric helps you understand how much content visitors are consuming and how deeply they are exploring your website.

Higher page view numbers can indicate:

    • Strong engagement
    • Relevant content
    • Effective internal navigation

However, page views should always be considered alongside other metrics to build a complete picture of performance.

    What is bounce rate?

Bounce rate measures how often visitors leave your website without taking a further action.

Typically, this means they arrive on a page and leave without viewing another page on the site.

Many business owners become concerned when they see bounce rate for the first time, but context is important.

A typical website often has a bounce rate of around 50%, although this can vary significantly depending on industry, content type and user behaviour.

Some websites naturally experience higher bounce rates, whilst others perform below this level.

The key is understanding trends rather than focusing on a single number in isolation.

Why does Insight Owl compare data against a previous period?

Raw numbers only tell part of the story.

A website receiving 10,000 visitors may be performing exceptionally well if traffic has increased by 50%. Equally, the same website could be underperforming if traffic has fallen significantly.

That’s why Insight Owl automatically compares your data against a previous period.

This allows you to quickly identify:

    • Growth trends
    • Traffic declines
    • Seasonal changes
    • Marketing improvements
    • Areas that require attention

The comparison percentages help transform data into meaningful business insights.

What does the Website Traffic graph show?

The report includes a colour-coded graph showing trends across the selected reporting period.

The graph allows you to visualise how users and sessions have changed over time.

This makes it much easier to spot:

    • Traffic spikes
    • Seasonal fluctuations
    • Marketing campaign impacts
    • Long-term growth trends

Rather than reading rows of numbers, you can quickly identify patterns and understand how your website is performing.

    What is the AI-generated summary?

Every Website Traffic report includes a plain English summary generated by Insight Owl.

This summary has been designed specifically for busy business owners who don’t want to spend time interpreting complex analytics reports.

    The AI summary explains:

    • What the data is showing
    • Key trends
    • Significant increases or decreases
    • Areas worth paying attention to

    The objective is simple.

Turn data into something useful and actionable.

Can you edit the traffic report summary?

    Yes.

If you’re generating a management report, board report or client report, you may wish to customise the commentary.

When generating reports from the Insight Owl home screen, select View and Customise rather than Quick Export.

    This allows you to:

    • Edit the AI-generated narrative
    • Add your own observations
    • Remove content
    • Tailor commentary for your audience

Many users personalise reports before sending them to stakeholders or executive teams.

Why is the Website Traffic report important?

Website traffic is often the starting point for understanding marketing performance.

If people aren’t finding your website, it’s difficult to generate enquiries, leads or sales.

The Website Traffic report provides a simple way to understand:

    • How many people visit your website
    • How often they return
    • How engaged they are
    • Whether performance is improving over time

Combined with the Traffic Sources, Google Search Console and Rankings reports, it forms an important part of your overall marketing intelligence.

    What should you do next?

Generate your Website Traffic report using the default 12-month view and review the trends highlighted within the dashboard.

Pay particular attention to changes in users, sessions and bounce rate, then compare those trends against your marketing activity during the same period.

If you want a deeper understanding of where your visitors are coming from, the next report to explore is the Traffic Sources report.
